A classic 1920s Queenslander, this home was purchased by our client for its "beautiful bones"- large rooms, grand columns delineating living and dining spaces, beautiful timber fretwork and decorative ceilings.
The main problem was the Arts and Crafts-inspired dark stained timber walls and columns in the living areas soaking up the light. While stunning in their own right, they were not ideal for a tropical Brisbane climate where light, sunshine and outdoor living are more the order of the day.
The brief, essentially, was to bring in the light by opening up the space between kitchen and dining and lightening the dark timber. The new kitchen and bathroom had to fit with the style of the home as well as provide efficiency with plenty of storage space.
The colour palette of soft pale grey (Resene 'Rakaia' and 'Alabaster'), masking the the most interesting of the dark timber, against the refurbished floorboards bring life to this now beautiful light and airy space.
